The forest was beautiful once. That was how it learned to hide its dying. Niko was young when the first cracks appeared: the cold black Iron Vine buried in the earth, the Sour Rain that burned the leaves, and the distant roar of the Old Ones beyond the Great Wood. The forest still seemed abundant, but its balance was beginning to fail. His mother, Kaela, understood what Niko could only feel. She warned him that the strength of the Old Ones came at a price. Rhos believed the answer was stricter laws and greater discipline. Others hoped the sickness would pass. But the poison was already in the soil, and the world beyond the trees was drawing closer. Then came the Grove. Kaela showed Niko a hidden place whose roots drank from springs the Sour Rain could not touch. She called it the last good place.
